The first, perhaps the most blunt, is that it increases our reach, allowing us to maneuver more dexterously with its prehensile arm extensions. Each arm also has the addition of a camera centered within its retractable claws, which feeds back into the users visor. This second part necessitates the sacrifice of one eye, in exchange for the addition of 2 new perspectives (one from each arm). The team and I sought to imagine what sort of societies would develop on such a construct, and pushed our design capabilities to their fullest. Our goal as a team was to create 4 different quadrants that each contained our own individual styles, while also remaining true to a cohesive design aesthetic. My own quadrant, the Ghost Town as I called it, features the lowest economic class of the society, as the town itself shows signs of wear and tear. I created the design for an information bot, which speaks to the viewer as they travel through this section of town. We each took over several roles, from animation of characters, level design, alpha testing, programming, to storyboarding and sound design. Each level features unique layouts and color pallets which fit to the boss monster of every level. We created a fully functional game in a very short period of time. In this project I explored how level layout and design could impact how a player moved through the story. In this endeavor, I avoided simply creating a being who could either be happy, sad, or angry, and instead worked to capture a more tertiary emotion: Social Anxiety. When activated, Shybot hurriedly seeks out the darkest area in a room. Anything under a certain threshold (Varying from sunlight to indoor lighting) causes Shybot to flee to darker spaces. Essentially, my robot seeks to “hide.” As I demonstrated Shybot’s routines to peers, I noticed a commonality between how people would refer to Shybot. As soon as he began moving, Shybot’s viewers language would shift from referring to Shybot as an “it” to a “him.” This completely fascinated me. The only personifying features of the robot are an 8x8 LED matrix which displays a very pixelated face, and the routines which control his movement. The subject of the piece, the skeleton with human skin projected over it, sits exactly at eye level. It stares you down as you enter, alive, but also eerily still. Then, great globs of colored liquid drip down the sides of the screen as the cacophonous roil of thunder spills over speakers. Cloud imagery allows the viewerto draw the connection between the subconscious creative process and the conscious brainstorm. The projection of different colors of ink dripping down into the water represents the undisturbed mind and the ink represents various thoughts, ideas, or emotions. Furthermore, the work draws into mind the cycle of rain, through condensation, precipitation, and eventually evaporation as it relates to the creative process. In essence, the idea was that a painting is created from layering paints on top of one another, and in a fit of inspiration, I realized that this process is much the same for creating a cheeseburger. As such, I created the image of a burger from burger ingredients.
